The Lord comes to us in order to deal with our sinfulness, and our resultant sins. The Lord deals with us; He does not let us continue on as before. But at the same time, God deals us with in surprising ways. He deals with us by means of His grace. He washes us, teaches us, and sets us down at His Table. After all, here we are.
And what does God offer us here? When God gives us food, what is He giving to us? Psalm 36 gives us a glorious picture: “They shall be abundantly satisfied with the fatness of thy house; and thou shalt make them drink of the river of thy pleasures. For with thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light” (Ps. 36: 8-9).
You are welcome here through the grace of God, plus nothing else. But the fact that you earned nothing does not mean that you receive, by grace, barely nothing. The fact that you have no works to offer does not mean that God responds with tiny grace. No, what happens here when you come by faith? You are abundantly satisfied. What is it that accomplishes this? It is the fatness of God’s house. You do not come here for tiny rations. You do not come here for thin commons.
And what do you drink from? You drink from the river of God’s pleasures, a river that another psalm tells us flows at God’s right hand. You drink from a river of infinite pleasure, and you do so in a place of privilege—God’s right hand. When God sets the Table, we do not just “get by.” So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
