“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)
Growing Dominion, Part 157
“The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason” (Pr 26:13-16)
One of the great themes of Proverbs is the destructiveness of laziness. We have here a short chain of proverbs on the subject. The first, that the lazy man says there is “a lion in the streets,” points to the fact that lazy men are always wealthy with excuses, at any rate. The lazy man is also industrious in his own kind of way, turning back and forth on his bed. The lazy man excels in his laziness, no one can top him. Getting a fistful of food to his mouth is too much work frankly. And, despite how obvious all this is to the whole world, the sluggard has got it all figured out in his own head—more than seven men who can make good sense of it.
