“Confidence in an unfaithful man in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint” ” (Prov. 25:19).
We have already considered a proverb which talks about the difficulty in “getting good help.” Here we have the same theme, but with the additional factor of discussing how exasperating it is when the people you have to rely on are being obtuse, getting distracted, being lazy, or require the same instructions multiple times. Here Scripture tells us that such confidence is misplaced, and that it is a severe handicap.
We can gather one other thing from the passage. This happens, it says, in “time of trouble.” When a business is flush, it is possible for that business to “carry” a certain measure of incompetence. But when times of trouble arrive, and everything is close to the margin, incompetence can sink the whole thing. Businesses often tolerate clear problems in times of prosperity because they think it “doesn’t matter.” And it wouldn’t matter, if we were all promised trouble-free lives. But we weren’t.
