It Is Not So

After the Lord Jesus established the sacrament of the Supper, He asked His disciples if they had lacked anything when He sent them out. They had been commissioned to go without purse, money, or shoes. When He had done this, He asked, had they come to lack for anything? They had lacked for nothing was the reply.

You are being fed here at the Table of the Lord. You are nourished here. If you have this, you lack for nothing, and can lack for nothing. If you do not have this, it does not matter if you own the world – you have lost your own soul.

As you return to your vocations, having been fed at this Supper, recognize that, whatever the world might say, you have a blessing through faith which they cannot comprehend. If you are poor, what you have are unspeakable riches because what you do have is blessed by Jesus Christ Himself. If you are rich, as the world counts riches, then you have been fed here in such a way as to enable you to see that earthly wealth is like the grass of the field, which withers and perishes in a day. It is a blessing, but beside this blessing, it is to be reckoned as a small thing indeed.

Like the weak now say, “I am strong.” Let the poor say, “I am rich.” Let the wealthy confess that the central wealth of the kingdom is open and available to all who come by faith in Jesus Christ. This Supper is your central nourishment, regardless of who you are. This Supper puts everything in perspective.

Is God going to give you this, but then deny any of you anything else that you might need? It is not so.
