He Owns It

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 97

“A just weight and balance are the Lord’s: all the weights in the bag are his work” (Prov. 16:11).

The interesting thing here is not that God requires honesty in business, but rather the reason He gives for requiring this honesty. He requires honesty from a Christian businessman because the honest cash register is His. The upright calculations and the bookkeeping are His as well. When invoices are written truly, the stack of invoices are all His. Of course in one sense, God’s ownership of the whole thing is the basis for requiring honesty. A dishonest Christian is implicating God in the scam, and is using His equipment to make the fraud work. But in another sense God claims that the work done by honest merchants is His work. When the work is just and honest, God owns that work in both senses of the word owns.
