“He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough”
(Prov. 28:19)
Proverbs are given so that we might know what is generally true. They are not intended to give us universal truths of the “all P are Q” variety. That said, it is generally true that those who are industrious in their labor have enough bread to provide for themselves. But the flip side of this proverb is not about what the lazy man does not do to provide for himself (work), but rather what he looks to instead. He looks to, follows after, vain persons. He does not expect to provide for himself from the labor of his hands, and so he looks for a financial savior—whether a political figure, or a get-rich-quick charlatan. He follows after vain persons, vain solutions, instead of getting up early and working hard.
