The Word rebukes our sidelong glances at the world. Not that kind of laughter. The Word rebukes our choreographed repentance. Not that sancitmonious smarminess. “Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls” (1 Pet. 1:8-9). A man who looks at this and does not laugh for joy does not understand. He has not really confessed his Christianity; he has not spoken the creed in truth. He has a heart of stone, and a head to match” (Angels in the Architecture, p. 78).
