For Some It Has to be Hard

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 155

“A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back” (Prov. 26:3).

As much as tenderhearted people might wish it to be otherwise, there are some people who cannot be communicated with except by means of hard knocks. One of the mistakes made by employers of such individuals is that of absorbing those blows, picking up the pieces for them, and trying to explain the lesson just “one more time.” But if you do this, you are often interfering with the only way that the truth will be communicated to such an individual. This is difficult for the person watching it because the whole process seems so hard. The lesson was apparent immediately (or so it is thought), and surely no one could fail to miss the point, which was quite a simple one. But in many cases this is quite counterproductive, and this means that the foolish person angling for hard knocks is not the only person who is slow to learn.
