“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 77

“The slothful man roasteth not that which he took in hunting: but the substance of a diligent man is precious” (Prov. 12:27).

In every discipline, one of the most important things is follow-through, finishing strong. This of course includes the discipline of work, the disciplines that are involved in business. The slothful man here was somehow prevailed upon to get up early to go hunting. He feels industrious, almost like a real man. The sun wasn’t even up. And he worked, after a fashion. But because of his laziness, he does not enjoy the fruit of what he took in hunting. He did not finish the job.

The other half of this proverb points us on the right path. The substance of a diligent man is precious. We see here that substance is the result of working all the way through, and that a diligent man is the one who accomplishes that work all the way through. Diligence produces follow-through, and follow-through produces substance. And substances is not only precious, but enjoyed. Enjoyed by whom? By the diligent.
