Faults and Crimes

The word autia is rendered a number of different ways. When it refers to objectionable behavior, the context helps determine how it should be translated. It is rendered as the accusation that was recorded against Jesus at His crucifixion and nailed to the cross above Him (Matt. 27:37; Mk. 15:26). When Festus is talking about the case he inherited from Felix, he refers to the accusation made against Paul (Acts 25:18), and later in the chapter, when he talking to Agrippa about it, he uses the same word to refer to “crimes” (Acts 25:27). And Pilate says, three times, that he found no fault in Jesus (Jn. 18:38; 19:4,6).

It is obviously a general term, and the normal use of it in the New Testament refers to those false accusations which false hearts love to deliver.
