Eating What Is Set Before You

Sharing Options

We heard earlier that this Table is the arbiter of disputes. This is what Table fellowship means; this is what true Table fellowship does.

You were no doubt taught by your mother that good manners involves learning how to eat what is set before you. It is no different here, and this is true on two levels. First, on a mere physical level, realize that according to the Word of God, bread and wine are set before us. We have made grape juice available for those who would are tender in their conscience and would have trouble if they were to drink wine, but please know that for everyone else, we should drink what is set before us. If it is not a matter of conscience, then remember that you are coming to His Table. For example, if your children simply do not like the taste of wine, then this is clearly a taste they need to acquire. If you refuse the wine for simple reasons of mere convenience, then let me exhort you to drink what Christ established.

Second, on a spiritual level, realize that God is dealing with us as we come to this Table. This means that every form of shrinking back reveals that there is something in your life that you do not want Him to deal with. Recognize this, admit it, and lay whatever it is at His feet. There is no obstacle with Him. What is your obstacle?

Come, have a seat. The place is set for you. The wine is poured, the bread is prepared. Lady Wisdom has set the table of wisdom, and if you shrink back from it, it is because you are longing in some way to partake of the table set by Folly. So come now, eat. Come and drink.
