Cool Your Baby Jets?

I posted last night on the Petraeus marvel, which got bumped down the page. If you missed it, you can catch up with it here.

Keep in mind that we are not speculating about a possible cover-up from a standing start. Remember that for those who have been following the story, there has been a massive cover-up in process already. This is just the final cherry on top of a bushel basket already full and overflowing.

Incidentally, the fact that it now involves sex makes it much more likely that the attention of the American public will not wander off as is our wont . . . like some Ritalin kid in an inner city school or something. Understanding the previous Benghazi scandal called for an attention span of more than fifteen minutes of thought, and a modicum of respect for Fox News and/or Glenn Beck. But since we are now officially in a Brad Thor potboiler, and this is a genre that Americans think they understand, quite a few extra folks are out in the lobby getting their popcorn now.

So think about it for a moment. Here are the basic options.

1. The timing of the resignation was a coincidence. It came out when it came out, and we are confronted with an optical illusion. Cool your baby jets.

2. It came out because blackmailers with the administration released the dirt on him because he wasn’t playing ball with their official cover-up account, and so they busted him. This makes no sense because they could only steer him with threats of exposure, not with actual exposure. Now that it is out, what does he have to lose by telling everything?

3. It came out because blackmailers who were enemies of the administration threatened him with exposure because it looked as though he was going to play ball with the administration’s cover-up. This would make tactical sense, but the problem here is that Petraeus had already made things difficult for the official account.

4. It came out because blackmailers with the administration tried to control his testimony by playing this card in private, and so Petraeus countered them by deciding to bust himself.

So, then, we sure don’t know. But we do know enough to go get some popcorn.
