Our God is the God of all comfort. His Table is the Table of peace. We know that we are to confess and set aside our sins before we come, but we also need to be reminded that we should confess and set aside our fears.
This is a holy Table, and so we know that we are not to bring unholy things to it. But we need to reflect more on how this is a peaceful Table, and so we are not to bring our anxieties, fears, emotional tumults, or worries.
The Lord Jesus is the one who looked at the waves on Lake Galilee and said, “Peace, be still,” and the wind and the waves obeyed Him. How big are your waves? How unsettled is your heart? You come here, among other reasons, so that the Lord can say to you, “Peace, be still.” When He did this to the waves, the disciples’ response was to ask who He was. What kind of man is this? We know who He is, and so we should be looking to Him in expectation, waiting for Him to speak. Your heart may be in a tempest, but you are Christian, and the Lord is in your boat. To change the metaphor back again, the Lord who can speak with such authority is at the head of His Table, which is this Table. He invites you to sit by saying, “Peace.”
The bread and the wine that is offered here is sacramental food. It is holy food. It is the food of love. But never forget that in the most fundamental way possible, it is also comfort food.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
