Bread Baked in Heaven

As the Lord broke open the bread of life, and as He gave the cup of the new testament, He went on to say that the hand of the one who was to betray Him was resting on the same table. He went on to say that the Son of man was going just as it had been determined in the counsel of God, but He pronounced a woe unto the man through whom it came. In a brief sentence, He put all turmoil about predestination and human responsibility to rest. God purposes will be done, but woe to those who do evil.

The proper response to this is to worship and bow down, and not to catch at words. Every hand on that first table, the Lord’s excepted, was a defiled hand. Every person who has come to the Table since that first Supper has been a sinner. Peter took the Supper and then denied the Lord. The others took the Supper and then fled in the face of danger. All of them took the Supper and then began an argument about which of them was the greatest. And when the Lord offered the Supper to them, and to us, He knew all about our folly and sinfulness. He does not demand perfection so that we might earn the right to come. He invites, so that He might fashion us into the true image of God, the image of the Lord Jesus.

The only one He pronounced a woe upon was Judas, a man in obvious high rebellion. Are you in such high rebellion? It would be better for you to drop dead where you are than to ever taste another morsel from His table in that condition.

But are you simply a sinner, troubled by that sin? Then come. Are you at odds with a brother? Then come. Do you struggle with lust? Then come. Do you find yourself looking down on others? Then come. These are all manifestations of your desperate need for a different kind of food, food that is not carnal or earthly. This is bread baked in Heaven, this is wine from the vineyards of Paradise. This is food that comes down from above, and like the wisdom that comes down from above, it is first of all peaceable.

You are a sinner, but through the gospel, you are at peace with God. So take and eat. Take and drink.
