“You may not institute homosexual marriage because __________________________”

Your pastor is being interviewed by a reporter and he has just been asked to fill in this particular blank. There are different ways he can go.

1. He can decline to answer the question for manifestly craven reasons.
2. He can decline to answer the question for noble-sounding reasons — e.g. He wants to stick to “preaching the gospel.” In other words, he wants a pious veneer for his cravenness.
3. He can say that the God of nature prohibits it.
4. He can say that the God of Scripture prohibits it.
5. He can say that the God of nature and Scripture prohibits it.
6. He can reject the premise of the question, and say that homosexual marriage is not prohibited.

If it is 1,2 or 6, it is time for a new pastor. If it is 3,4, or 5, this gives you some grist for good-natured debate over your fellowship dinners.
