Because Everything Might Change Tomorrow

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 159

“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Pr 27:1).

This passage states quite an obvious point, but it is one that is overlooked in business ventures more often than many other areas of life. In fact, when the Lord’s brother restates this principle, he applies it in the first place to business ventures (Jas. 4:13-16). Now Proverbs also teaches us that we should look ahead, and plan for the various contingencies that might arise. But that generally means that because winter is coming just like last year, we ought to make sure to work hard to get the harvest in. It is when the prospect of making sky high profits enters the picture that a willingness to leave it all in the hands of God leaves the picture. So the point is not to refuse to make a business plan; the point is to hold your business plan up to the Lord on open palms.
