The bread and wine on this Table are simple fare. But appearances can be deceiving.
In the course of His ministry, Jesus declared all foods to be clean. Just as the two great commandments encompass all the law and the prophets, so also this bread and wine encompasses every form of food found in the world. Because we eat here, as disciples of Jesus, we are freed to eat anything. When you go out from this Table, and you approach any other earthly table, you are perfectly free to suit yourself. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, and that liberty includes both tofu and Velveeta, though perhaps not together.
And why is this? It is not what goes into a man that defiles a man, but what comes out of him. Snark, gossip, lies, and more all come out of our mouths, and represent the abundance of our hearts. What goes into our mouths here at this occasion represents the abundance of God’s heart.

It is not what goes into a man’s mouth that defiles a man, but when we eat and swallow, drink and swallow, in evangelical faith, what goes into a man does cleanse a man. It does strengthen a man. This Table is a means of sanctifying grace. God multiplies grace to you here. God is giving to you. God is rooting you in His love. God is establishing you. God is nourishing you.
And what is your role? Your role is to believe that He is doing so. We approach this sacrament by faith. So come and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
