A Ritual, Not a Routine

The Supper of the Lord is a ritual that knits us together. We come here, week after week, to worship the Lord — to confess our sins, to sing His praises, to hear His Scriptures read aloud, to hear his Word preached and proclaimed, and to sit down with Him at Table.

Some of you may not have known what you thought of weekly communion when we first went to that practice. Some of you may not know what you think of it now. But all of you, if you are visiting another church, and the service does not end with communion, feel like something is missing.

Now this will happen with any custom — it need not be a sacramental custom. But when a sacrament is involved, it is important for us to realize that there is a covenantal aspect to it all.

This means that if we are not careful, we could come to miss something we have not really taken care to understand in the first place. This is a time in the service where we are privileged to undertake, yet again, a covenant oath. We are bound to the Lord, and He to us, and this covenant is renewed as those bonds are strengthened, cinched, worked tighter. As we do this, it is paramount that we know that we are doing it. Do not do it thoughtlessly, or lightly. You children, who are growing up with the privilege of coming to the Table — you are not being taught to take it lightly or as a routine. You are being taught to not take it lightly. You are being nourished to enable you to not take it lightly.
