A Little Christmas Exhortation for August

Sharing Options

We celebrate the nativity of the Lord suitably when we remember that He came to rule the kings of the earth. We shall consider shortly what the great Caesars think of this, but the exhortation here is that we must remember His lordship over every petty tribal chieftain, particularly those in our hearts that resist His claims.

As you prepare to honor Him, do not do so by getting hassled. He came as the prince of peace, not the prince of frantic material consumption in His name. Give to others; do not burn out for them.

As you prepare for your family celebrations, remember that Jesus taught that it is more blessed to give than to receive. Be thinking more of what you have prepared to give than what you anticipate receiving. Children, this applies particularly to you. In your childhood, learn the blessings of giving.

At the same time, do not rob others of the pleasure of giving to you through a sour stoicism. Delight in how others love you through their gifts.

Do not forget to eat and drink. The helm of all eating and drinking that we do is the Lord’s Supper here. Let the Table here set your course and direction. Do not eat and drink as those without hope. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness of it.

Honor the Lord, and honor His people.
