For the last two thousand years, the Christian Church has been toppling tyrants. This started when the kings of the earth and the rulers of the former age banded together and decided that they were going to throw off the Messiah’s chains. They had Him in the grasp, and so they killed Him.
But Jesus rose from the dead, which did more than disrupt their plans—it absolutely destroyed their plans. Since that time, the Lord has told us to counter every attempt to bring back the old order by similar means. We are to imitate the Lord’s way of doing this. We are commanded to destroy their plans . . . how? By gathering together to sing psalms and hymns, hear the Word declared, and to eat bread and drink wine. What kind of battle plan is that? I’ll tell you . . . it has overthrown more despots than all the armies of the world combined. We wonder what kind of threat that kind of behavior could be, but note—how do totalitarians treat free and unrestricted Christian worship? Right . . . as the ultimate threat to everything they want to do.
Now one writer accurately described our current president as a “dime-store Ozymandias.” Sometimes the strength of unbelief looks more powerful, sometimes less powerful. But regardless, overthrow their pretended strength with gospel weakness. Take note—any weakness brought in by our sin overthrows nothing. But the weakness that is the result of obedience is something that the devil and all tyrannical rulers fear. Such obedience is resurrection fodder. Such obedience is seed in the ground. This is what God uses.
So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
