Temporary Republicans

Visionaries,

Sven writes that he has heard about a “group” that said that “there are thousands of ex-Republicans throughout the country! They are living proof that Republican orientation is not fixed permanently…”. So Sven argues that there’s hope for this unnatural, sinful leaning if only folks will seek it.

Of course Republican orientation is not fixed permanently. Republicans change into Democrats over a period of fifteen years or so, only to find that the Democrats have pressed on, ever deeper into the fever swamps of the Revolution. So the Republicans always hurry to catch up, but are unwilling to change their name. One great writer of the 19th century described it well, pointing to a conservatism that never conserves anything, the mere shadow that follows radicalism to perdition.

To change the metaphor, Democrats advocate driving us off the cliff at 80 mph. The Republicans want to go 65. One of the funniest things in the world to watch is any debate between people who believe that our current two-party system is anything but a Mutt and Jeff show.

Cordially,

Douglas Wilson

Apologetics in the Void” are repostings from an on-going electronic discussion and debate I had some time ago with members of our local community, whose names I have changed. The list serve is called Vision 20/20, and hence the name “visionaries.” Reading just these posts probably feels like listening to one half of a phone conversation, but I don’t feel at liberty to publish what others have written. But I have been editing these posts (lightly) with intelligibility in mind.
