He is risen. He is risen indeed!
On this day, two thousand years ago, the Lord Jesus rose from the dead, conquering it forever, throwing down the collected might of all the principalities and powers, releasing the redeemed human race from its fear of death, and reversing the power of death that had dominated our history from the disobedience of Adam on. Since that time, the history of the world has been the history of inexorable, unconquerable, irresistible, invincible life – a life that has been working through the whole world as yeast works through a loaf of bread.
The Lord Jesus took all our soiled corruptions into the grave with Him, and came back with our robes of everlasting righteousness. The Lord Jesus descended to death with the Sabbath, and came back to everlasting life with the Lord’s Day in His hands. The Lord Jesus went to the grave as countless emperors and kings had gone before Him, and unlike them, He came back. And coming back, He established a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Everything else can be shaken, but not this. Anything else can be shaken, but not this.
The Lord Jesus went to the grave apparently alone, but when He arose we have since discovered that He had countless, innumerable brothers and sisters. We have since discovered as well that we are numbered among them. This being the case, rejoice and be glad.
