That Celibatey Feel

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

The Basket Case Chronicles #78

“But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry” (1 Cor. 7:36).

There are two aspects to a man’s improper treatment of such a virgin. The first is obvious—if the couple is under a vow of celibacy, but his longing glances have less and less of that celibatey feel about them, more bedroom eyes than prayers-in-the-cloister eyes, he should just knock it off and marry her. And the second way a man would treat his virgin in an unseemly way would be by ignoring what we would call her biological clock. Paul expressly mentions her age, and appears to be thinking about her desire for children. Under such circumstances, it is no sin to marry.
