Slippery and Slipperyier

Solomon tells us that all the human basics are cyclic. They go around, and come around around again. He is not referring to the invention of gadgets, but he is talking about what makes civilizations tick.

This is why so much of the discussion about “modernity” and “postmodernity” is just pretentious. What we call Enlightenment modernity was just the period when our public authorities fell into unbelief. Postmodernitiy is when they discovered that unbelief is a slippery place, and they fell into it deeper.

The guy at the bottom of a collapsed ladder does have some bumps and bruises, and perhaps a broken bone or two, but he also has better things to do than to call his condition post-structuralism.

Our task, therefore, is not to jolly our blinkered intellectuals along by accepting their overblown and overheated rhetoric about how we got here. We have been on a theological bender for a few centuries now, and we are sitting under the florescent lights of the ER in the middle of the night, blinking confusedly, and the attending doctor is having trouble getting anything coherent out of us. The best he can come up with is that we are post-Silver-Saddle-the-one-in-Potlatch.

So our task is to proclaim the crown rights of King Jesus, an imperial authority that is not based on raw dictat, but rather on His shed blood that forgives every sin it comes in contact with. But it is important to note that it comes in contact with sin in places others than the individual human heart. It does that too, of course, but the blood of Jesus deals with the sins of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the President. The blood of Jesus purchased every state legislature, and the surrounding grounds. The blood of Jesus purchased every major New York publishing house. We should tell them. The blood of Jesus owns every art form, and has all movie rights. We should tell them too. The blood of Jesus is mixed into the mortar that holds the true cornerstone. It is the only real basis for any future civilization. There are no other real options.

Which means there is therefore no way to preach the blood of Christ without advancing the sacrificial glory of the next Christendom.
