This meal is a royal feast; the Lord Jesus is the king, and He has invited us all to sit down and partake with Him. But the fact that we are seated at this Table should not make us careless of our manners.
Haman was invited to a meal by a queen, and he sat down to eat and drink with a king and queen. But because there was treachery in his heart, he was eating and drinking his own condemnation. Consequently those who come to this meal with covenantal treachery in their hearts should take heed to themselves.
But if you love Jesus Christ, and there is no base treachery, then you should come, take, and eat, and come, take, and drink as though you have been invited, as indeed you have been invited. You should come as though there is no trap—for there is no trap.
Â
The only ones who are caught in a trap at this Table are those who bring their own trap. This cup is the cup of blessing—not the cup of blessing and cursing. This is the bread of Heaven, not the bread of Heaven and Hell. Just as marriage is a blessed institution, so this meal is a blessed institution. Some, because they bring their own traps to their marriages, entangle themselves, but the problem is not the fact that God created us male and female.
In the same way, there is nothing here but blessing, and this blessing is received by faith, simply and honestly. If you want something other than that here, then you are the one that has to bring it.
What shall we say then? Come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
