Tokens of Affection

The Lord is kind to us in the tokens of His affection that He gives. He gives them in all affection and kindness, and we are to receive them in the same way. But as we have seen in the sermon today, these are tokens, not props. God loves us through His Word, through His sacraments, through His ordinances. He loves us through these things—He is not all tied by them.

If a husband gives his wife a bouquet of flowers, this is presumably not because he wanted to get into a debate with her over what color they actually. He offers them in a spirit of affection, and they are a great blessing when she receives them in the same way.

We should not over-analyze what God offers us. He promises to meet us, to feed us, to comfort us, to encourage us by certain institutions that He has established. He has given us precious tokens. But just as Jesus told the Pharisees that they searched the Scriptures while missing the point of them, so also too many have searched the sacraments—all while missing the whole point.

Jesus is here. He is in the body, and you, that body, are the bread. You receive the bread, and you give yourselves back to one another (in all affection), because you too are bread. You consume and you have the privilege of being consumed. This is not put before you as a mystery in metaphysics. It is the way all healthy relationships work. And the Lord’s Table here is covenantal relationship.
