Just a brief recap of the day — more detailed discussion will occur later. Nate is traveling on this gig with us in order to write short pieces for Christianity Today online, the first of which can be found here. And speaking of CT, it would be appropriate to extend a word of thanks to them again for getting this whole ball rolling.
We caught the train in Philly, had a very pleasant ride down to DC. We had lunch in Union Station, and then off to the CDN studio, where we were both interviewed by Lee Webb. They have a total of a half an hour or so of material, which I believe they will begin airing near the end of November.
Christopher and I get on quite well, and I really enjoyed his clear pride in Washington as his adopted home town. He is full of information about what happened here, and what ought to have happened over there.
We got to Martin’s Tavern in Georgetown, and found it crammed. While waiting for the cameras to get finally adjusted, I sat for a few minutes in the booth where JFK proposed to Jackie.
The introductions were made by Sally Quinn of the Washington Post, and then we were off. The guests were a thoughtful, responsive bunch, and seemed pretty evenly divided between Christians and atheists. Christopher and I each had an opening statement, then we had about forty-five minutes of asking one another questions, with no moderator. The guys making the documentary got lots of good footage. After that, we opened it up for questions from the floor. The whole trip was very good, but this event was the capstone.
And many thanks to Christopher. As he wrote to me, when I asked him to sign my copy of his book, “well met” indeed. More later. I have to get up at four.
