This meal that we are privileged to have before us is a meal of foreshadowing. God is directing all of human history toward a glorious culmination, and that culmination will be a feast.
We see a glimpse of this in how the martyrs coming out of the great tribulation were received by God.
“Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes” (Rev. 7:15-17).
When we go to be with the Lord, note that we will hunger no more. This is not because food is taken away, along with the need for it. Rather, we are told that the martyrs hunger no more because the Lamb in the midst of the throne shall feed them.
Just as we will be fed by Christ in the consummation, so we are fed by Christ now. God reminds us every week that our destiny is to commune with Him forever, and He reminds us of this by communing with us here and now. Every week, we are being acclimated to the feasting of heaven. Every week God prepares us further. Every week, the one in the midst of the throne feeds us.
