God is the God of food. He created food, and He created it in order to bestow it on his people. He made a world full of food, and has invited us to partake of all that He has set before us.
This is His character; this is what He is like. As it says in Psalm 136, God “remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for ever: And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth for ever. Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth for ever” (Ps. 136:23-26).
So our God is the God of food. As He has undertaken the reestablishment of all humanity, the re-creation of the world in and through the Church, He has repeated this same theme that was apparent at the first creation, placing food before His children. He gives food to all flesh.
There are two things here that we should keep in mind. The first is that God gives food to all believers, and in the growth of the kingdom, this will come to be an offering to all flesh. As the Great Commission is fulfilled, and as the Church spreads to every corner of the globe, we are authorized to extend this invitation. The Spirit certainly says, “Come,” but let us never forget that the bride also says, “Come.” Hear the invitation, which is the Gospel, come to the door, which is the laver of baptism, and come to the Table, which is here before us now.
But the second point is that He does this because His mercy endures forever. What God gives proceeds, always, from what God is like. What is the heart of God like? He is no tightwad. He is not stingy. He is not close-fisted. Why are you here? Why are you seated here at His table? You are here because His mercy endures forever.
