There are only two tables in the world. The one is the Table of the Lord, the true Table, the place when life is offered and served. The other is the table of demons, the table of death. God has established a complete antithesis between the two, the difference between life and death, heaven and hell, wine and dirty ditch water, light and darkness, nourishment and poison.
But although God has established His Table on these terms, the fact that we are being sanctified from our remaining sins makes us frequently think that there is a possible third way. We are tempted to think that we can create a more sophisticated, urbane religion, and take what we like from both tables. Far from being sophisticated, such thinking is extremely simple-minded, and flies in the face of what God’s Word expressly tells us. Friendship with the world is enmity with God. Acceptance of their dinner invitations, in this sense, is rejection of God’s dinner invitation.
We ought not to over-analyze what God has given us. He has given it, we should receive it, and we should receive it on the terms He sets upon it—repentance and faith.
