Dear Doug,
Count it naivete on my part that I didn’t have my guard up regarding the Hardees commercial video but I wish I had not seen that strange flesh. Maybe a warning would help others?
Love,
Daniel

“I wish I had not seen that strange flesh.”

By which I presume you mean, the combing of bacon with beef? That’s GOTTA be proscribed SOMEWHERE in Leviticus, right?

[sorry … ]

Pastor Doug, I am very grateful for you. I think it would be best if you gave some kind of warning when you post a video with half-dressed women. I wish I could say I was far enough progressed in Christ to be totally unaffected by such things, but it is not the case, and I trust there are still many others who have a similar reaction to these things.

As a general rule, I boycott Carl’s Jr advertisements as they objectify and encourage lust after women as much as anything in advertising, and their CEO has stated that such a morality reflects his own values. I wouldn’t say everyone has to boycott their food too, as I do, but I do think that disseminating their ads is unwise.

For what it’s worth, I have the same reaction (also to Burger King, for their ads making sexual morality seem like a joke in the service of selling burgers).

That pregnant lesbians article is something else. I knew they were fond of having babies by various means (I am great aunt to a child from such a circumstance), but abortions? Lesbians getting abortions? That means the pregnancies are not all planned and artificially created. Crazy.

Jane, homosexuals were by definition crazy — that is until the homosexual lobby was able to force the American Psychiatric Association to remove homosexuality from the list of mental disorders.

I remember seeing a stat that suggested that in Gotham, students identifying as homosexual or bisexual were more likely to be pregnant than average. Now the sample had also had a confounding factor that the “homosexual” students were also those who had had heterosexual sex, so it was a methodological mess, but even that raises all kinds of questions.

Here’s a link. 2x more likely to become pregnant compared with heterosexual promiscuous young ‘uns.

http://www.newnownext.com/gay-and-bisexual-teens-more-likely-to-get-pregnant-than-straight-peers-study-finds/05/2015/

Now is it innate preference, or opportunistic copulation? I think for a significant minority here, it’s the latter.

I think it is becoming less common for lesbians to have sex only with women. My impression from my daughter’s circle of acquaintances is that you can primarily identify as lesbian and have sex with men as desired. Or you can think of yourself as straight but have sex with women now and then. Or you can identify as bisexual and have sex with anyone who is both willing and attractive! But absolutely nobody is identifying as promiscuous.

That does seem to be what’s going on. I guess I just wasn’t aware of it. I shouldn’t be surprised, though.

Without knowing the full scope of the survey, and as aberrant as it is to contemplate, what if some of the pregnancies were intentional for the sole purpose of having an abortion? Seeing how crazy some of the pro-aborts are, there are those who might do anything to be part of the group.

Jonathan, Dave W, and Daniel do you all live in bunkers with eye masks on and ear plugs in? Do you have all your food and supplies delivered through a slot in the bunker door? Except for the internet, are you exercising the Benedict Option? All of us want a peaceful, God fearing community where men and women are dressed appropriately; however, that is a bit down the road still. This is the fight. That is why the commercial was posted. The commercial showed less skin than what is seen walking around at college, high school and yea even in… Read more »

Dave, I would have loved to criticize the other things you mentioned; I didn’t get a chance to see them for the titties bouncing in my face. Do I live in a bunker? Afraid not. I live in the world where my temptation to lust fights my devotion to Christ 37 hours a day, sometimes without much relief in sight. I come home weary and worn, anxious and only hopeful Christ is my righteousness. I get online and look at just a few Christian websites (this one above all) for a dose of truth from the men I trust most.… Read more »

Dave, I can’t comment on this particular ad because I didn’t watch it. I stopped watching all Carls Jr ads a decade ago because they not only enticed people to sin, but glorified it, and that debased mentality went all the way up to the top. But some of the reactions to it tell me things haven’t changed. The ad isn’t like that because of a “feminazi” culture. Playboy was founded 65 years ago, before the cultural revolution got going at all, and men like Puzder and Hefner (and Trump and Vince McMahon and Howard Stern and Larry Flint) have… Read more »

But then I considered that the commenter sense of humor range on this blog, starts at less than zero, and yet ranges well over 100%!

Jonathan and Dave W, don’t let your tight shoes get in the way of scripture or living a life to draw others to Christ. You are correct, I am not in the formal ministry and have no aspirations to do so. I am happy that a minister of many years did post the commercial with the not exactly repentance theme. Feminazis have been around for a long time, long before Hef and his promoters started working the chumps in the American market place; long before the 60’s cultural upheavals pushed on the walls of America’s shaky culture. Consider Margaret Sanger,… Read more »

My shoes are very comfy. And it was Scripture that told me not to look at scantily clad tramps. And the only lives that really draw to Christ are those reflecting something of God’s holiness. Doug is one of the only pastors I trust and will remain so, but he did wrong in posting this video without warning, and possibly simply by posting the video at all.

I read part of the link you gave; maybe I’ve had a long week, or the writer’s irony is too thick to see through, but I was a little lost. I assume the purpose is to mock my position. At bottom I am saying that I shouldn’t have to ask Christian brothers (much less pastors) to not show me pictures and videos with bouncing titties, crotch and asses. It’s obvious Christians shouldn’t have to worry about such things from other Christians. And really, what could be stranger than having to argue the point with other Christians? Maybe this is such… Read more »

For reference, Carl’s Jr. was founded by Carl Karcher, and Hardees was founded by Wilber Hardee. So they’re doing beautiful make believe about the founder, as well as make believe that they’re really going away from pretty girls to advertise their products.

And as the daddy of four pretty girls and husband to another, I’m all for pretty girls, but I don’t need to see all but ten square inches of a pretty girl to eat a hamburger. Just sayin’.

bethyada

The point of the Carl’s jr video for those who have not watched it, was that we have focused on selling through entertainment and pretty women. We need to stop this and focus on good food.

That is the reason for Doug’s title. Not exactly repentance (but a change).

Well, an alleged change, at any rate. I noticed that the ad still managed to include enough entertainment and women to placate the former fan base, despite all the claims to a higher purpose. Pretty savvy marketing, IMHO.

I am making no defense for Carl’s junior. Only that the message was contrary to what those who had not viewed it were saying.

It sounds like you’re saying that the “claimed” message was different, but that the underlying approach was exactly the same. This is what Puzder said about sexy ads in the past: The point of the ad is to emphasize all things American…a beautiful, young, Sports Illustrated swimsuit model in an American flag bikini, in a hot tub, on a pickup truck that’s painted with the American flag, driven by a rodeo bull rider on an aircraft carrier, in front of the Statue of Liberty while fireworks are going off. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with a beautiful woman in… Read more »

I saw it, and I don’t think so. I think they were trying to have it both ways. Sneak the raunchy stuff in, while appealing to the idea that some people don’t like it.

“We need to stop this and focus on good food and while we’re talking about that, look at these sexy images all over the place.”

I have never understood this. I don’t want to sound as naive as I probably am, but what do girls–dressed or undressed–have to do with hamburgers? Nobody thinks that they are going to find spectacularly pretty girls at a fast food place. Nobody thinks that a girl will be turned by a man whose hamburger is oozing grease and pickles. What is the actual connection? Or am I over-thinking this?

bethyada

Over thinking it.

Men like to look at pretty girls.

On the other hand, if appetite in the soul is all one, then at one end of the appetite men long to consume hamburgers oozing grease and pickles and at the other end of the appetite men long to consume undressed, pretty girls. Mix the two primary ends of man’s appetite into one advertisement and you succeed in doubly stimulating both ends; the whole appetite is now ablaze. This is another reason for my desire to avoid typical worldly stimulation; I don’t exactly care to walk around all day with my appetite on code red.

Makes sense. I think this is something women don’t necessarily understand but should take men’s word for it.

Agreed. My wife has no idea what I’m talking about and I tell her repeatedly she is blessed for having no idea what I’m talking about. Men are creatures of appetite, and women are appetizing creatures. Probably the thing about women I envy most.

Wilson (and I’m sure others) has taught that men want to want, and women want to be wanted. This is not an inherently bad thing. It’s very complementary. But it needs to be matured and disciplined to be enjoyed as God intended.

I agree. I think the design I mentioned is actually straight from God and sin is not at all needed to explain it. CS Lewis makes an interesting comment in Hideous Strength about women being interested in the female body for about the same reason as men are. Not sure I get him completely, but I think he is after something similar. Men rejoice in women’s beauty and women rejoice in men rejoicing in women’s beauty. God is very good.

Agreed. If anyone is unsure why so many people in the Middle East think of America as the Great Satan, they should consider America’s advertisements and music videos being beamed across the world. A step away from flesh-flaunting is a step in the right direction.

When I was living overseas and working for Uncle Sam, both the Japanese and the Germans asked me if I had shot any Indians lately.

At the time, they loved to watch American westerns and various TV shows which gave an extremely slanted view of America. As a note, if you visit any some of the Middle Eastern countries and watch TV, you will see shows there that provide a completely false view of the US. It is not just our advertising, they do have considerable amount of home based help on the Death To America front.

Unfortunately, I think there is more than a little bit of envy going on in the Middle Eastern culture as well. It’s not simply a hatred of our decadent immorality, as it is a reaction against the kind of heart that it reveals to exist in their own native culture. They can see the power of modern extravagance, and how weak they are, as a religious culture, to resist its pull. Their conscience convicts them, but they don’t have a Gospel that changes the heart, so they secretly indulge the flesh, but turn their hate on the bringer of the… Read more »

I suspect that the pregnancy article has to do with the issue of sexual promiscuity (and prior sexual abuse).

Sexual identity is supposedly about innate and unchangeable desires (unchangeable and innate when it is called a sin in an attempt to deny sin (and also that the desires are profoundly strong)). But it turns out, surprise, that the sexually precocious and promiscuous, not to mention the sexually abused (no faulting them) are more likely to be even more promiscuous and even more adventurous.

Sin leads to sin. Who’d have thought it?

Did the article consider that one reason for the high pregnancy rate among lesbians (and among the girls gay men sleep with) might be not using birth control? Most sexually active, single straight women make some kind of effort not to get pregnant. Lesbians might be less likely to plan ahead.

The number of gay men becoming fathers was pretty surprising. I always warned my daughter that her gay male friends couldn’t be assumed to be as “safe”as girlfriends. There must be a lot out there playing the old “maybe with the right woman, I wouldn’t be gay” card.

Enjoyed free speech apocalypse. I thought the “last act” tie-in to Lincoln and slavery was a little tenuous at first. But now, that’s really what has stuck with me. That and the blasphemy discussion. Neither are new ideas but both are driven home quite well. Pastor, Wilson, it seems you’ve blasphemed the god of this age, so you must suffer the consequences. Those who would be first to decry a blasphemy law would also be first to call for a law against speech that goes against what they hold most sacred. “You WILL glorify our god, Mr Cake-man. You will… Read more »
