The French have a saying: “plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose”, which translates to “The more things change, the more they remain the same.” The Latin succinctly quip “mutatis mutandis” to frame analogous entities. Is not the current Christian/Reformed attitude towards divorce the same, mutatis mutandis: “He broke the vows, therefore I can have another husband.” If God’s covenant with His people exists despite our unfaithfulness — and it does, praised be God — so does the covenant between husband and wife.

Blessings,
David
