When Looking to Abraham Isn’t

“Hearken to me, ye that follow after righteousness, ye that seek the Lord: Look unto the rock whence ye are hewn, And to the hole of the pit whence ye are digged. Look unto Abraham your father, And unto Sarah that bare you: For I called him alone, And blessed him, and increased him” (Is. 51:1-2).

“And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham” (Matt. 3:9).

To the unconverted heart, it appears as though God trifles with us. He tells the Jews specifically to look to Abraham, and then John the Baptist says that looking to Abraham is no great shakes. Isaiah tells them to look to Sarah, and then the apostle Paul tells a bunch of them that doing what they were told actually made them sons of Hagar (Gal. 4:24).

To the unconverted heart it looks that way. To the converted heart, the distance between looking to Abraham and looking to Abraham is as vast as the distance between Heaven and Hell. There is a chasm between the two, and the bosom of Abraham on only one side of it.
