Sex, Sexuality, Gender and Everything In Between

It looks as though Wheaton has had a speaker (Jim Wallis) who (according to this report) believes that homosexual rights issues are biblical “justice” issues, and who is in favor of civil unions for homosexuals. Let’s work with this for a moment.

The problem is not that Wheaton is having a speaker with such convictions. That by itself is completely fine. The difficulty is that the zeitgeist in contemporary evangelicalism is such that Jim Wallis can show up and not get all his lunch money taken in the Q & A. If Wheaton were doing what a Christian college ought to do, the students would constitute a gracious and rapidly spinning buzz saw and Jim Wallis would be the plank of pine. But inviting Jim Wallis to speak in the current climate simply illustrates how lost at sea the evangelical establishment is. The central theological issues of our day have to do with sex, sexuality, gender, and everything in between. This is the spot where our ship sank, which we tell by all the assorted confusions we can see floating on the surface.
