Because You’re Family

In Psalm 28, David asks the Lord to separate His people out from the wicked. He asks the Lord to deliver them from the judgment that is coming upon them. When he concludes this psalm, the way he puts it is striking. “Save thy people, and bless thine inheritance: feed them also, and lift them up for ever” (Ps. 28:9). When God saves and delivers His people, please note that He feeds them. When He lifts us up forever, He does so because He has fed us. God is our Father. He provides. God is our Father; He brings provision. God is our Father. He feeds us.

If we forget who He is, and what He is like, we will drift into crazy thoughts. What would you think if one of your children came to the table tonight and said that he or she did not deserve to be there with the rest of the family? There are two issues involved in this. First, the child is quite right, and ought to be answered with, “That’s exactly right, honey. None of us do.” But the second thing is that you ought to be concerned that some strange pattern of thought is developing. You come to the table, not because you deserve to be there, but because you’re family. That may not seem like a very good reason to you, but God finds it compelling. Come, eat and drink. You’re family.
