Because Business Isn’t Everything

“At thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore” (Ps. 16: 11)

Growing Dominion, Part 162

“Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation? The hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered. The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field. And thou shalt have goats’ milk enough for thy food, for the food of thy household, and for the maintenance for thy maidens” (Prov. 27:23-27).

This is a great passage to study when it comes to learning how to study your vocation. Look well to your herds; be diligent in knowing the state of your flocks (v. 23). This is a passage that requires you to have a good handle on your inventory, and on the condition of your warehouse. And the reason given for being diligent this way is because riches are not forever (v. 24). Be diligent in your business precisely because wealth doesn’t matter. A carnal form of reasoning says that if wealth doesn’t matter I shouldn’t pay any attention to it—this verse says the opposite. Study as well when hay shows up, and tender grass, and the herbs of the mountains (this of course is for a man with flocks, v. 25). You will get a return on all this; your diligence will pay off (v. 26). And you will have all that you need (v. 27). And you must be diligent in learning how to run a business . . . because business isn’t everything.
