Sacrifice and Love, Grace and Gift

The prophet Habakkuk tells us in a certain place that though earthly food may fail us, God will remain our portion. He says it this way:

Although the fig tree shall not blossom,
Neither shall fruit be in the vines;
The labour of the olive shall fail,
And the fields shall yield no meat;
The flock shall be cut off from the fold,
And there shall be no herd in the stalls:
Yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will joy in the God of my salvation” (Hab. 3:17-18).

This is how we may apply these words here. Though earthly food may fail you, this heavenly food will never fail you. Though your table at home may be scantily set, though you are struggling with thin commons, this Table is always set. Though you have abundant food of an earthly sort, such that you are stuffed with it, surfeited in an unhealthy way with it, this food remains, simple and wholesome—bread and wine, sacrifice and love, grace and gift.

Though you don’t know how to eat, this Table will teach you to eat. Though you tend to think that it is all about the substance of what you put in Your mouth, the Spirit will teach you that it is more about with whom you eat. This is a fellowship meal.

You are here. You are welcome. Rejoice in the God of your salvation, and rejoice in the Lord always. He is here. You fellowship with Him. His bread is for you. This wine is His gift. Your sins are forgiven. Your past is wiped away. His kindness lies before you, and does so everlastingly. His goodness is from generation to generation. He knows how to be kind to His people, and you are His people. So come, and welcome, to Jesus Christ.
