It would perhaps be helpful to recall that “sacrament” and “sacramental” do not occur in the Bible, and the exact sense of the Vulgate’s latin is iffy, except that with it Jerome translates mysterium. So, are we saying, “they give mysterious significance to our whole lives”? Or perhaps, the sense is taken as “sign and seal.” Then, are we saying, “they give the quality of sign and seal to our whole lives”? But that somehow doesn’t have quite the same pizzaz does it? Not to mention, that it borders on the heresy of pan-sacramentalism.
