On Its Own Level

[About Wodehouse] “In this age of instant gratification, fast food, fast-lane commuting, and tele-right-nowing, it is wonderful to find great literature that is capable of doing exactly the same thing. Some great lit just competes with other great lit. But it takes extraordinary lit to compete with drivel—and on its own level, too” (Writers to Read, p. 57).

I am sorry I don’t share your enthusiasm for Wodehouse. I read ‘The Adventures of Sally’ and found it entertaining. ‘The Clicking of Cuthbert’ was amusing at points. ‘The Coming of Bill’ was dreadful. Could not even finish it. None of them were page turners, those books where you must keeping going, ‘just another page or two before I outen the light’.

Perhaps the fault is in me. Moby Dick was another which never saw the end. But it is supposed to be great literature.
