John Piper was kind enough to interact with my blog post on divorce and remarriage here. My original post is just a few down the page right now, but for future reference the link is here.
A fuller response will have to wait, but suffice it to say for now that I think John’s arguments are truly serious and weighty, but I find myself unconvinced. I am going to try to flesh this issue out as I finish working through this chapter.
Just two quick comments for now. I am persuaded by what Jay Adams argues for in his Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible (pp. 84-85), particularly on the meaning and use of luo in v. 27.
Second, part of John’s argument rests on the role of the parthenoi later on in the chapter, and after I get through that section I will have accomplished at least two things. First, my understanding of the whole chapter will become clearer to everyone and, second, I will have lost pretty much everybody. So there’s that to look forward to . . .
