Holy Communion in the Piety of the Reformed Church
Holy Communion in the Piety of the Reformed Church by Hughes Oliphant Old
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Beginning with John Calvin, Hughes Oliphant Old offers this exhaustive treatment of “holy communion in the piety of the Reformed church.” Massive, scholarly, and devotional, this book is the real business. Over 800 pages, if it has to do with Reformed sacramental piety and is not in here, you probably didn’t need to know about it anyway.

Does professor Old get into the subject of guarding the table (or is it guarding the sheep?) from approach by the little ones or those of non-approved Christian denominations?

I think I need to get this and read it because I just came across Stephen Perks ‘The Chirstian Passover’ only last week where he makes a persuasive case that the reformation didn’t reform communion anywhere like it did baptism. He contends this is overdue for reform, specifically the restoration of the agape-love feast and I’m imagining that I can hear the echoes of Gary North’s essay on protestant sacerdotalism while I read.
